Watching Too Much TV Can Be Hazardous To Your TV
Ask Asa Solves Stock Ticker TV Burn

POSTED: 2:45 p.m. EDT August 30, 2002

CNBC is NewsChannel 4's sister network that among other things runs up-to-the-minute stock information along the bottom of the screen.

"I watch CNBC a lot. I'm a big CNBC fan," Rosanne Drechsel said.

So much of a fan it looked like Drechsel had managed to imprint CNBC on the large screen TV she bought at 6th Avenue Electronics in Livingston, N.J.

"We were watching another channel one night that there was a bar and a shadow across the bottom of the television set and first we didn't know what it was and then it finally dawned on us that it's the white ticker tape bar that the Dow comes across on CNBC," Drechsel said.

The faint ghost image was annoying, but not nearly as aggravating as some of the explanations Dreschsel received from repair personnel.

"They said I was in violation of the warranty because I watch CNBC," Drechsel said. "They said any channel that displays a still pattern could damage the screen and that as a consumer it was my responsibility to find out which channels they were and not watch them or follow the instructions in their manual."

Drechsel is no TV novice and she does read the manual. She even set up a separate TV for her kid's video games to avoid a possible screen pattern. She never thought a collection of moving numbers could cause problems. Pioneer is not budging. It said the damage is not covered under warranty. So she's faced with quite a repair bill.

"They have to replace the whole unit. It's a very big job and it's an approximate cost of $2,500," Drechsel said.

But 6th Avenue Electronics, where she bought the $5,000 set, is doing all the repairs absolutely free of charge. They don't have to, but say it's in the name of good customer relations.

NewsChannel 4 talked with the technical folks at CNBC. Bottom of the screen information has become popular on several networks and NewsChannel 4 was told a screen burn like Drechsel's can indeed happen. They recommend to keep the brightness level on the set down to a reasonable level and to turn it off when not watching it.
